Role Overview

We are looking for an experienced Android Automotive Engineer with strong expertise in the Android audio stack to develop and enhance in-vehicle audio functionality. This role involves working across the Android Framework and Audio HAL layers, collaborating closely with embedded, driver, and DSP teams.

Key Responsibilities

Android Audio Framework

  • Design and implement audio-related features within the Android Open Source Project (AOSP).

  • Customize Android audio framework components such as AudioFlinger, AudioPolicy, and AudioManager to meet automotive requirements.

  • Develop and maintain vehicle-specific audio services and supporting framework components.

  • Work with CarAudioService to configure audio zones and control audio routing across different sources.

Automotive Audio Management

  • Implement audio focus and priority mechanisms for multiple in-vehicle audio sources, including navigation, media, phone calls, and vehicle alerts.

  • Develop volume and mute control logic tailored to automotive use cases.

  • Handle audio routing and source prioritization across multiple zones and playback scenarios.

  • Collaborate with OEM-specific services and vehicle integration components to ensure seamless audio behavior.

Audio HAL & System Integration

  • Develop, maintain, and integrate the Audio HAL using HIDL/AIDL-based interfaces.

  • Work closely with driver and DSP teams to troubleshoot and optimize the end-to-end audio path.

  • Analyze the complete audio flow from the Android framework layer through the HAL to lower-level audio components.

  • Investigate system-level audio issues and contribute to performance and stability improvements.

Requirements

  • 2–5 years of hands-on experience with Android Framework development, particularly Android Audio, or Embedded Android.

  • Strong programming skills in Java and C++.

  • Ability to read, navigate, and understand AOSP source code is essential.

  • Solid understanding of Android system architecture and framework-layer development.

  • Good knowledge of Android audio architecture and the lifecycle of an audio stream from the framework down to the Audio HAL.

  • Experience or strong understanding of CarAudioService and Android Automotive audio architecture.

  • Familiarity with software architecture principles, design patterns, and UML modeling.

  • Strong analytical and debugging skills.

  • Comfortable working in an Agile software development environment.

Nice to Have

  • Experience developing Android applications involving media playback or audio recording.

  • Hands-on experience with Audio HAL development and Android Audio Policy XML configuration.

  • Familiarity with Android audio debugging and diagnostic tools, including:

    • Logcat

    • dumpsys

    • QACT

    • AudioTrack / AudioRecord traces

    • AudioFlinger traces

  • Experience with engineering and collaboration tools such as JIRA, Confluence, Git, Gerrit, or RT.

  • Familiarity with system architecture/modeling tools such as Enterprise Architect or Rational Rhapsody.

  • Experience working on Android Automotive or in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems.

  • Exposure to DSP, audio driver, or low-level embedded audio development.
