Role Overview
- Work closely with engineering, security, application, and infrastructure teams to design, implement, validate, operate, and continuously enhance enterprise infrastructure across private data centres and public cloud environments, with a primary focus on Azure and Linux-based platforms.
- Ensure infrastructure services, network components, security configurations, and operational processes follow the organisationโs established technology, security, governance, and compliance requirements.
- Drive reliability, automation, standardisation, and lifecycle management across a complex hybrid technology environment.
๐ General Infrastructure Responsibilities
- Provide technical direction and knowledge sharing to junior members of the infrastructure and systems operations team.
- Advise internal stakeholders, engineering teams, and technology partners on practical approaches for deploying and maintaining workloads across data centre and cloud environments.
- Partner with infrastructure, application, security, and architecture functions to ensure operational requirements are considered during solution design and implementation.
- Help establish and maintain standard infrastructure patterns covering compute, storage, networking, identity, security, observability, and Linux operating system configurations.
๐ Automation & Infrastructure Engineering
- Build and maintain automation scripts, workflows, and operational tooling to improve infrastructure consistency, scalability, and efficiency.
- Hands-on experience with Ansible and AWX for Linux and infrastructure automation.
- Apply Terraform to provision and manage infrastructure through Infrastructure as Code practices across private and public environments.
- Develop reusable enterprise automation modules and IaC templates covering Linux servers, network and security components, platform services, monitoring, and logging.
- Connect infrastructure automation workflows with CI/CD processes to enable controlled, traceable, and repeatable infrastructure changes.
๐ Security, Governance & Compliance
- Partner with security and governance functions to validate infrastructure implementations against organisational security and operational requirements.
- Ensure infrastructure configurations meet defined security baselines, access-control policies, regulatory obligations, and internal standards.
- Introduce automated policy validation and compliance controls throughout hybrid infrastructure environments.
- Develop automated mechanisms to identify security configuration issues, inappropriate access, configuration drift, and deviations from approved standards.
๐ DevOps, Observability & Production Operations
- Work with release and change-management functions to maintain controlled, auditable deployment pipelines with appropriate approval and traceability mechanisms.
- Implement and maintain monitoring, logging, alerting, and observability capabilities for Linux workloads and infrastructure services.
- Analyse system behaviour using operational metrics, logs, and event data to identify performance issues and underlying causes.
- Troubleshoot infrastructure incidents, service disruptions, and production performance problems across both cloud and on-premises environments.
- Contribute to infrastructure asset tracking, resource planning, tagging practices, and cost optimisation initiatives.
- Participate in business continuity and disaster recovery activities, including solution design, automation, and recovery testing.
๐ Expected Outcomes
- Consistent infrastructure standards and Linux operating system configurations across hybrid environments.
- Automated security and governance controls that reduce operational and compliance risks.
- Reliable configuration management and infrastructure automation through Ansible/AWX.
- Centralised observability capabilities covering monitoring, logging, alerting, and operational reporting.
- Well-maintained technical documentation, operational runbooks, automation workflows, and recovery procedures.
๐ Technical Requirements
- Strong hands-on experience operating infrastructure across on-premises and public cloud environments.
- Practical experience with Microsoft Azure infrastructure; exposure to AWS is an advantage.
- Strong Linux administration background, with Windows administration knowledge considered a plus.
- Experience with virtualisation technologies such as VMware, together with knowledge of storage and backup environments.
- Good understanding of core networking concepts including DNS, TCP/IP, HTTP/HTTPS, firewalls, routing, and network segmentation.
- Hands-on experience with Ansible and AWX for infrastructure and operating system automation.
- Working knowledge of Terraform / Infrastructure as Code.
